Growing an Independent Travel Publishing Brand

How my publishing and growth work helped Hawaii Guide expand into an independent travel resource and compete without a legacy media budget.

Overview

John Derrick created Hawaii Guide in 2002. Today it is an independent Hawaii travel publication published under Guide of US, and one of the longest-running businesses I have helped grow. It exists to help travelers plan real trips to the islands, backed by SEO-driven content, curated tour and activity partnerships, and an e-commerce and affiliate layer that supports the business.

My Role

Publisher & Growth Strategist. I lead marketing, content, SEO, email, and partnerships, and I currently run our physical product line.

The Challenge

Hawaii travel content is one of the most competitive, highest-intent verticals online. Large legacy travel publishers and well-funded affiliate sites already dominate search results for nearly every high-value keyword, and travelers researching a Hawaii trip are met with generic listicles that rarely reflect current, on-the-ground knowledge. Building an independent voice in that space, one trusted enough to earn both search visibility and reader loyalty, meant competing without the budget or backlink profile of the incumbents.

Strategy

Rather than trying to out-produce larger publishers, I focused Hawaii Guide on depth and specificity: content organized around real travel-planning questions, structured to rank for both broad and long-tail searches, and supported by an email strategy that kept past readers coming back for trip updates instead of treating them as one-time search traffic. Affiliate and tour partnerships were built selectively, prioritizing operators and experiences I could stand behind rather than maximizing volume.

What I Led

  • Marketing strategy and brand direction for the publication
  • Content strategy and editorial direction for the destination guide library
  • SEO strategy across on-page structure, internal linking, and keyword targeting
  • Email marketing program for pre-trip and returning travelers
  • Affiliate and tour operator partnerships
  • Our physical product line, which I currently run
  • Human-led, AI-assisted workflows for research organization and content operations

Results

Hawaii Guide has grown into a durable, independently owned travel publication with an established library of island-planning content, a returning email audience, long-standing tour and activity partnerships, and a physical product line. More importantly, the business has remained useful through years of changes in search, social media, traveler behavior, and the Hawaii visitor industry.

1.22Munique visitors in the last 12 months
2.09Mpageviews in the last 12 months
8,282ranked Google keywords
100K+active email subscribers

These figures are published in Hawaii Guide's 2026 media kit, which identifies Plausible Analytics and Ahrefs as its data sources.

Lessons & Takeaways

The biggest lesson Hawaii Guide taught me is that independent publishing can still work in a search landscape dominated by scale, but only if you are willing to be more specific than the incumbents rather than louder. It is also where I learned to think like an operator rather than a single-discipline specialist. SEO, content, partnerships, and e-commerce all have to move together, or none of them perform as well on their own.
